Application for the 2021 Japanese Government Scholarship Program is now OPEN!

Planning to study in Japan? Apply for a scholarship grant and study in the “Land of the Rising Sun” for free! The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines has recently announced the opening of the 2021 Japanese Government Scholarship Program which is open for interested and qualified Filipino citizens.

2021 Japanese Government Scholarship Program

For more than 60 years, the Japanese Government has been granting scholarships for Filipinos to study in Japan. For years, an annual average of 100 scholars from the Philippines has been granted to study under six different scholarship programs: Teacher Training Scholarship, Japanese Studies Scholarship, Undergraduate Student Scholarship, Research Student Scholarship, Specialized Training Scholarship, and College of Technology Scholarship.

What are the Qualifications Needed for the Scholarship Program? 

All applications for the 2021 Japanese Government Scholarship Program are processed through the Japan Information and Culture Center of the Embassy of Japan.

  • Teacher Training Scholarship

The Teacher Training Scholarship is a special scholarship offered for interested applicants who would want to conduct research on school education in one of the selected Japanese universities. Grantees are given the opportunity to stay for one and a half year to complete the research.

Deadline of Application: January 24, 2020 (Friday)

Qualifications: Must be a Filipino citizen, born on/after April 2, 1985, has at least five years of teaching experience in primary or secondary schools as of October 1, 2020, currently employed as a teacher in an elementary or secondary school, and is interested to learn about Japanese culture.

  • Japanese Studies Scholarship

The Japanese Studies Scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend a year to continue their study of Japanese language or culture in one of the universities in Japan.

Deadline of Application: January 24, 2020

Qualifications: Must be a Filipino citizen, Born between April 2 to April 1, 2002, and is currently enrolled as an undergraduate student majoring in fields related to Japanese language and/or Japanese culture

  • Undergraduate Student Scholarship

The Undergraduate Student Scholarship gives applicants the opportunity to spend up to five years to study in a Japanese college or university as an undergraduate degree student of the following fields: Natural Science or Social Science.

Interested applicants must take note of the following guidelines:

  1. All submitted documents WILL NOT BE RETURNED. Should keeping a personal copy be deemed necessary, it must be done BEFORE submitting the required documents.
  2. Successful applicants are required to submit an original or certified true copy of Academic Transcript of Records and Certificates of Graduation of School/University.
  3. Medical check-up may be undertaken in ANY hospital or health institution, as long as the form is in conformity with that is shown in the guidelines. Please ask your doctor to fill in all the required data. The medical certificate may be submitted after the first selection process.
  4. Successful applicants are required to present an originally signed recommendation letter after the first selection process.
  5. Due to the huge volume of applications received every year, the people working under the scholarship may unable to confirm receipt of documents from each applicant. Please check courier service provider on how to verify delivery/receipt of your documents. Inquiries on application status will not be entertained.
  6. Only short listed candidates will be contacted to take the exams and interview which will be held in Manila. Note: In cases wherein face-to-face interview will not be possible, the interview will be conducted online.
  7. All documents must be arranged according to the list and placed in a single enveloped or folder. Number the documents (1 through 9) in the right upper corner.
  8. Please mail your application package to the following address on or before the indicated deadline date below. Late applications WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

  • Research Student Scholarship

The Research Student Scholarship provides applicants the opportunity to spend 18 or 24 months to conduct independent research under a Japanese professor. Any field of study is eligible but applicants must find a Japanese professor that is willing to supervise the research. However, this does not guarantee that the applicant will be placed with that professor.
 Interested applicants must take note of the following guidelines:

  1. All submitted documents WILL NOT BE RETURNED. Should keeping a personal copy be deemed necessary, it must be done BEFORE submitting the required documents.
  2. Successful applicants are required to submit an original or certified true copy of Academic Transcript of Records and Certificates of Graduation of School/University.

  • Specialized Training Scholarship

The Specialized Training Scholarship is an opportunity given to applicants to spend up to three years at a Japanese professional training school.

The College of Technology Scholarship is offered to applicants who are interested to spend up to four years of study in a Japanese College of Technology.
