Ilaputi: Modern Twist on Comfort Food

Every food has story to tell. And so as the one who prepared it.

Thanks to his experience of preparing variety of dishes for his children, Jan Rodriguez, came up with a simple carenderia that would cater the students of University of San Carlos Talamban. Established in 2002, “Ila Puti”, which pertains to his nickname, became an instant hit to the students as they provide modern twists on the usual fried chicken, bola-bola, and other dishes that are still served up to this day. To have an edge against their neighboring competitors, they air-conditioned their carenderia to provide a more comfortable dining area for their guests.

Instead of pursuing formal training on culinary, Jan widened his learning for food preparation by watching culinary shows and exposing himself to the different food cultures across the world. He then began combining recipes and experimenting on different delicacies which at first he thought was only therapeutic for him. Earning positive responses from his patrons, he later decided to expand his place to Vibo Place in Escario and IT Park. From a humble carenderia, Ila Puti gained attraction from its diners because of the richness of the menu – Asian and Fusion dishes – kindness of the crews, and the creative and cozy interior of the restaurant.
