Lapu-lapu City to break Guinness World of Records for Largest Cross installed underwater

Construction of the largest cross installed underwater continues as Lapu-lapu City, Cebu strives to beat the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Cross installed Underwater”.

On the Facebook post made by Lapu-lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan, he shared the updates on the work done for the planned 100-meter cross which will be installed in Barangay Tingo in the island of Olango – exactly across Barangay Punta Engaño of mainland Mactan. This aims to attract more visitors – both foreign and locals – to visit the place. Most importantly, the underwater cross symbolizes the unwavering faith of the Cebuanos.

The Largest Cross installed Underwater

The current record holder for the largest cross installed underwater spans up to 70 meters long. Lapu-lapu City aims to break this record with its 100-meter underwater cross – which is made from artificial coral reefs that will soon become the habitat to marine life.

In this time of struggle, the cross highlights the deep faith among many Oponganons, as well as thanksgiving for the blessings and protection provided despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

As one of the best diving sites in Asia, this underwater cross will provide another tourist attraction – and bring forth good tidings to the economy and to the locals of Cebu.
