Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) Wins Another Award – The 2019 World Architecture Festival

After more than year since the Mactan Cebu International Airport officially open its doors to the public, its beauty has captured the notice of the super-jury of the World Architecture Festival 2019, awarding it the Completed Buildings-Transport category.  The contenders in this category included Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport and Sydney Australia’s Barangaroo Ferry Wharf, among others.  With over 148 judges from different countries, the recognition is a tourism booster for the Queen City of the South.

The architectural design of Terminal 2 is a collaboration between world-class Filipino designers and Principal architect of Integrated Design Associates (IDA) Hongkong Winston Chu.  Our very own Kenneth Cobonpue helped in the conceptualization of the design, as defined in its timber arches and floor-to ceiling glass panels. Some of the judges note on the simple elegance of the airport, using locally-sourced materials in completing its design.

According to the website, WAF runs from December 4 to 6 and is currently held in Amsterdam.  The list of entries in various categories like Health and Education, Retail and among others, undergo live crit presentations with a panel of jurors throughout the 3-day affair.

The various contenders for the Completed – Transport category were all amazing and beautifully designed, and for MCIA to be awarded among the strongest is an honor to make the city to be internationally known, not only for the beautiful beaches and tasty food but also for its creativity.  The award for the MCIA is a nod to the recognition given to Cebu City as part of UNESCO’s network of Creative Cities a few months under the design category.
