Mike Love Brings to Cebu A Revolution through Sound

CEBU, PHILIPPINES — To mark the ten-year milestone of Malasimbo Music and Arts Festival, the longest-standing festival in the country, Volume Unit Entertainment (VUE) is taking singer and songwriter Mike Love to the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino on Friday, 28 February 2020.

In Tune From the Beginning

With a foundation rooted in his deep connection with nature and spirituality, Mike Love has been playing message-based music that blends the sounds of progressive and classic rock, pop, R&B, soul, blues, flamenco, jazz, and more, giving out timeless pieces in all of his performances around the world.

Just like the many genres that span his distinct sound, his music is also heavily affected by his family. His father and grandfather, both composers, are big factors in the way he approached music, molding his natural instincts through experimenting with different musical instruments and styles. Through these influences, as well as the tutelage of his musical instructors, Mike has fully incorporated the beauty of timeless music into his life — and eventually, produced music that transcends to many generations from different places.

In 2008, he started a solo weekly residence developing a unique one-man-band style, using various effect pedals, live looping, and live dubs. The use of live multiple instruments, complemented by an array of different vocal techniques and styles, has become a signature of sorts for the musician. This paved the way for his solo format to blossom and become his main project.

After decades of creating sound and calling for movement in all of his music, Love released his first solo album The Change I’m Seeking with instant classics like ‘Permanent Holiday,’ ‘Barbershop,’ and ‘Human Race.’ He has also delved into more critical subjects on his albums with tracks like ‘Earthlings’ and ‘No More War.’ He has since then formed a super-band of top musicians he has worked with over the years, The Full Circle.

The Love for Love, Among Others

Cebu has long been known for a number of things: food, tourism, culture, and its people. But what is not well-known about the Queen City of the South is that it how it homes a music scene that is uniquely theirs. Appreciation for jazz and reggae is evident in the city, and one proof of this is the large following Mike Love has in this area of the country.

“Some of the biggest Mike Love fans on the planet are Cebuano,” VUE founder Miro Grgic says.

Thriving in its own right, the Cebu scene boasts its own set of talented local bands and musicians, who will be playing during the show as well. Joining Love in Cebu are reggae ska and dub band Junior Kilat, Selah Dub Warriors, and Cooliedread and the Microphone Commanders.
