It is connected to the island of Mactan with two bridges: the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge and Marcelo Fernan Bridge. On the north, it is bounded by the town of Consolacion and Cebu City to the south and western part. On its east is the Camote Sea and Cebu Strait. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mandaue-history\"><strong>History<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Various versions of\nhistory would tell the origin of the word Mandaue. Others believed that it was\na settlement called <strong><em>Mandani<\/em><\/strong> which was misspelled by chronicler Antonio Pigafetta.\nWhile the most accepted origin is the thick vine which grows abundantly in the\narea called <strong><em>mantawi.<\/em><\/strong> After a couple of name mutations, it eventually became\nto what it is presently called:&nbsp; <strong>Mandaue.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Spanish\nauthorities arrived in Cebu, the natives of Mandaue were forced into a town\nwhere was believed to have started as a mission village (likes of Consolacion,\nLiloan, and Poro). Years after, Mandaue became a semi-autonomous functioning\ntown under the jurisdiction of Cebu. It was during the establishment of American\nRule that Mandaue became an independent municipality in 1901.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On August 30, 1969, Mandaue became a chartered city and decades later was recognized as a highly-urbanized city. Last year, April 2019, President Rodrigo Duterte finally signed the law that declares Mandaue City as a lone legislative district \u2013 making it separated from the sixth district and allowing it to have its own representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mandaue-demographics\"><strong>Demographics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on a census conducted\nin 2015, Mandaue City has an estimated total population of 362,654 living\naround the barangays of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Alang-alang<\/li><li>Bakilid<\/li><li>Banilad<\/li><li>Basak<\/li><li>Cabancalan<\/li><li>Cambaro<\/li><li>Canduman<\/li><li>Casili<\/li><li>Casuntingan<\/li><li>Centro (Poblacion)<\/li><li>Cubacub<\/li><li>Guizo<\/li><li>Ibabao-Estancia<\/li><li>Jagobiao<\/li><li>Labogon<\/li><li>Looc (Mandaue)<\/li><li>Maguikay<\/li><li>Mantuyong<\/li><li>Opao<\/li><li>Pakna-an<\/li><li>Pagsabungan<\/li><li>Subangdaku<\/li><li>Tabok<\/li><li>Tawason<\/li><li>Tingub<\/li><li>Tipolo<\/li><li>Umapad<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mandaue-festivities\"><strong>Festivities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As urbanized as it has been, Mandaue proves not only rich in economy but as well as with culture. Every year, it celebrates its fiesta in honor of their patron saint, <strong>St. Joseph.<\/strong> This is held every 8<sup>th<\/sup> of May with weeklong activities held in all barangays like sports competition, Miss Mandaue, fairs, and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another grand celebration done in Mandaue is the solemn ritual called <strong>\u201cPanagtagbo sa Mandaue\u201d<\/strong>which is celebrated every third week of January on the eve of <em>Translacion \u2013 <\/em>part of the religious Sinulog Festival. Panagtabo sa Mandaue commemorates the union of the Holy Family \u2013 Sto. Ni\u00f1o from the Basilica Minore del Sto. Ni\u00f1o, Birhen sa Guadalupe, and Saint Joseph in Mandaue. This happens on a Friday before the fluvial procession by dawn the day after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mandaue-delicacies\"><strong>Delicacies<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The City of Mandaue\nis also a host to the best bibingka (rice cake) in the province. In fact, it\nhas attempted to win the Guinness Book of World Records for preparing the\nbiggest bibingka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from\nbibingka, tagaktak is also a favorite kakanin in Mandaue. Mandauehanons are\nknown to have such fine skills and control which are highly required in\npreparing this delicacy. It has been derived from the Bisaya term which means\n\u201cto drop\u201d because making this crispy snack entails continuous drop of this\nmalagkit mixture into a crisscross pattern before deep-frying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Binangos is another\nlocal favorite among Mandauehanons (and can only be found in the city). The dish\nis made from corned <em>bolinao<\/em> fish and\nbest paired with rice. Moreover, they boasts of their famous masareal and <em>buriring <\/em>fish stewed with <em>iba.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mandaue-renowned-individuals\"><strong>Renowned Individuals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mandaue City is\nalso a home to renowned individuals like artists <strong>Caridad Sanchez <\/strong>and <strong>Claudia\nZobel, <\/strong>world boxing champions <strong>Mercito\nGesta, Rodel Mayol, <\/strong>and <strong>Malcolm\nTunacao. <\/strong>The Filipino professional pool player who has competed alongside\nthe great Efren \u201cBata\u201d Reyes, <strong>Warren\nKiamco,<\/strong> also hails from Mandaue City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mandaue-must-visit-attractions\"><strong>Must-visit Attractions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a reason\nwhy a lot of travelers often opt to pass by Mandaue City. There\u2019s not much of\nnatural tourist destinations that can be visited in the area. But this does not\nmean that it doesn\u2019t have beautiful places that families and friends can\nhangout to. Here are some of the favorite destinations among Mandauehanons and\nCebuanos alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SkyWater Park Cebu<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Located\natop of JCenter Mall in Mandaue City is the first-ever waterpark facility which\nwas built 1,023 feet above ground level. Se\u00f1or de Cena was built in the\nNational Shrine of St. Joseph Parish which was established in 1601. It can be\nrecalled that the church bell tower and the life-sized image were severely\ndamaged by the American bombing, it was meticulously renovated and repaired by\n1998. The church was then declared as a national shrine by His Eminence Ricardo\nCardinal Vidal, then cardinal of Cebu, on August 6, 2001.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bantayan sa Hari<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Bantayan\nsa Hari or the \u201cKing\u2019s watchtower\u201d is an overlooking structure located in\nBarangay Looc, Mandaue City near Mactan Channel. While it can be easily take\nfor granted given its urban structure background, it served as a majestic\nstructure which stood guard among those crossing between Cebu and the island of\nMactan. It helped in alerting inhabitants of the coming of the Moro pirates and\nsecuring the safety of the church and its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Matias BBQ<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask\nany Mandauehanon for the best place to satisfy your craving for barbecue and\nthey will immediately lead you to their local favorite \u2013 Matias BBQ. Located in\nA.S Fortuna Street, Banilad, Mandaue City, Matias BBQ has become a local\nfavorite because of their budget-friendly pork and chicken barbecue, belly,\nbalbacua, gizzard, chorizo, and many other local appetizing dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mandaue Presidencia<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Home to Mandaue\u2019s <em>El Presidente<\/em> or mayor since the\nCommonwealth Era, the Mandaue City Hall (often referred as Mandaue Presidencia)\nis such a sight to behold because of its Neo-Grec style building which has\nserved as the seat of the government for the city. It was inaugurated on\nSeptember 12, 1937 during the incumbency of former Cebu governor Sotero Cabahug.\nHowever, during the WWII, it was utilized as a garrison by the Japanese\nImperial forces. It was reinaugurated on 1975 and has undergone major\nrenovation to accommodate the new city hall format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sergio Osme\u00f1a Bridge<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Also\nknown as the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge, Sergio Osme\u00f1a Bridge is the very first bridge\nthat connects the island province of Cebu to its neighboring island, the island\nof Mactan. This 1.6km bridge can be accessed via A.C Cortes Avenue in Mandaue\nCity and via Basak-Marigondon in Lapu-lapu City. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See? There\u2019s really\nmore to Mandaue than what meets the eye.
